April 1st is around the corner. In Italy, it’s called “Pesce d’Aprile” (April’s Fish), so if a rumor sounds too good to be true this Wednesday, like the M4 extending all the way to Lake Como, you’ve officially been warned.
Between the "pranks" and the petals, here’s the real deal: Milan’s universities (PoliMi & Bocconi) just dominated the global rankings, the city grid is getting a €200M high-tech glow-up, and Joe Bastianich is finally bringing his "smash" burgers to town.
Grab a coffee, watch your back for paper fish, and let’s dive into a busy Milanese week.
Quick Tip: Flower Power 🌸
If you need a screen break, these are the top spots to catch the bloom this week:
Piazza Tommaseo: The iconic pink magnolias.
Via Lincoln: Milan’s most colorful "hidden" street.
BAM (Porta Nuova): For a modern, botanical escape.

🏙 The Milan Brief: City News You Need
What happened last week and what’s changing in the city.
It turns out Milan is the capital of brains, not just fashion! According to the 2026 QS World University Rankings, Politecnico has secured the 6th spot worldwide for Architecture and 7th for Design, while Bocconi continues to dominate the economic scene, landing in the global top 10 for both Marketing and Management.
IN THE CITY / A €200M spark for Milan’s power grid
Milan is getting a high-voltage upgrade. The European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted A2A a €200 million loan to modernize the city’s electrical network. We’re talking about 600km of new high-tech cabling and nearly 800 upgraded substations.
The goal? Making the grid resilient against extreme weather and cutting CO₂ emissions by roughly 7 kilotons a year, the equivalent of planting 50,000 trees. Great news for the planet, and even better news for your AC next time a heatwave hits!
TRANSPORTS / €260M for 9 new Frecciarossa trains
Milan Central Station is about to get even busier. Trenitalia has signed a €260 million deal with Hitachi Rail for nine next-generation Frecciarossa trains. These "Made in Italy" speedsters aren't just fast (hitting 360 km/h)... they’re green! With a 97% recyclability rate. Designed to link Milan to major European capitals by 2027, they promise a future where hopping on a train to Paris or Berlin is smoother than checking a bag at Malpensa.
TRANSPORT / The Blue Line is stretching out
Milan’s M4 "Blue" metro is preparing for a €638 million growth spurt.
The final plans for a 3km extension from Linate to Segrate are heading to the Ministry by late April. This isn't just a couple of extra stops; the new Segrate Porta Est will serve as a massive High-Speed rail hub, effectively decongesting the city's main stations. Between the seamless bus-to-metro connections and a brand-new 700-spot parking lot at Idroscalo, commuting from the outskirts is about to become a whole lot less "Mission Impossible."
Joe Bastianich is putting his face (literally, it’s the logo) on a new project: Jb Burger. Partnering with Bun Burgers, the MasterChef legend is launching his new brand on April 4th at the Fiordaliso Shopping Centre in Rozzano. The focus is on the "smash burger" technique, thin, crispy patties with maximum flavor, blending American street food culture with high-quality ingredients.
